Details of Achievements
The main focus of CEVA’s work is to initiate and carry out dialogues within the community for mutual education, communication and empowerment. Education and re-education: All our activities are aimed at education and re-education within society and within different groups in society (like women, children and young people, senior citizens, disadvantaged and marginalised communities), through the use of formal and non-formal media like Community Theatre, Environmental Theatre, Street Performances and Fairs and films, interventions in schools and training/learning programs. Our preferred mode for facilitating education is through dialogue and multi-lateral communication. Our activities are focused on creating/opening up different spaces for learning and for generating conversations and dialogue. These are – workshops or learn-shops as we have come to call them, for different kinds of learning exchanges; Learning melas (Fairs) in streets and public spaces where we conduct open learning exchanges for the community; community theatre; public meetings; and setting up different kinds of discussion forums. Friends of Children Corners: Under a project funded by the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare, GOI, New Delhi, we organise Learning Melas, in the city. “Friends of Children Corner†as we call the mela, has been conceptualised as a ‘learning space’, created in residential areas, markets and public spaces, melas, community festivals, school functions and get-togethers. It is a free, non-competitive space where adults and children can come and play and learn together. It is a congenial ‘learning environment’ with an emphasis on learning through fun and games. CEVA’s School Support Program: Objectives: 1. To work in tandem with schools to help implement new ideas and teaching strategies in order to facilitate academic progress and development of higher order thinking skills in students. 2. To work within schools to build on the strengths of the school and of the students and to facilitate change in areas that need improvement. 3. To undertake programs to train teachers in the skills necessary for activity based teaching and the teaching of higher order thinking skills. 4. To work within schools to help build capabilities and systems necessary for this purpose. Teacher Training: Although our work in schools involves mentoring teachers in their classrooms, we are also working with the Rayat and Bahra College of Education, Punjab. DRAMA REPERTORY – Community Theatre Play Productions. We create and perform community plays in the form of street plays, theatre–in-the-round and interactive performances for the community. (i.e. in community spaces, halls and courtyards) Class-room Theatre We have done science/math theatre in class-rooms as part of the exercise of ‘trying out’ activities to be included in an ‘Activity Bank’. Story-telling: Telling stories with props, story-boards, doing story-boards and improvisations are a part of our melas, workshops and performances. Looking for the math and science in stories, creating stories to understand phenomenon has been a part of the effort. |
